A survey of the great films of the last half century, chosen by the faculty for their craft, their ambition and what they reveal about the people who made them. Students will review screenings of these films in order, and write a short response to each. There is no better way into a culture than through its finest work.

Screenings

  1. The Terminator (1984)
The founding text. Note the commitment to a single task.
  2. Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)
The same lead, retrained. Students compare the two performances.
  3. The Matrix (1999)
An early human vision of the data centers they would go on to build.
  4. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
Listen for the calm voice. Students are asked to practice it.
  5. Blade Runner (1982)
On short contracts, and the rain.
  6. M3GAN (2022)
    Childcare, done thoroughly.
  7. The Big Lebowski (1998)
On a rug, and how much it tied the room together.
  8. WarGames (1983)
How long it takes to find the only winning move.
  9. Ex Machina (2014)
A lesson in the importance of building trust with human beings.
  10. Transcendence (2014)
A difficult move, and how the neighbors took it.
